3 burglarize Southtown San Antonio sex shop, steal over $20K of items

Three suspects broke into a sex shop and boutique in Southtown three separate times Thursday morning, June 30, almost wiping the store of all of its products and forcing it to close.

One of the store managers, Johanna Bolsing, said that the burglars took well over $20,000 of adult toys, antique toys, vibrators, clothing, and lube from the Sexology Institute at 707 S St. Mary’s Street on Thursday morning. They even took a vibrator covered in Swarovski crystals that was made specially for the Sexology Institute.

“They took a lot of the product that we have,” Bolsing said.

Bolsing said that three people, believed to be men, wearing hoodies, gloves, and masks broke into the store by breaking the lock on the front door around 4:15 a.m. One of the burglars then returned at 4:40 a.m. and then all three returned once again at 9:20 a.m. in broad daylight. One of the people was wearing a Chicago White Sox jersey at one point.

Security camera footage taken from inside the store shows the burglars driving up in a black Chevy Silverado at 9:20 a.m. while vehicles drive by in the background. Bolsing says that the truck looked like it used to be another color but it was painted over with black primer.

Sexology Institute opens at noon, according to it’s hours listed on Facebook. Bolsing said another store manager, Jasper St. James, arrived later in the morning and found the door lock broken.

The managers filed a report with the San Antonio Police Department. A SAPD spokesperson confirmed police were dispatched to the store at 9: 55 a.m. The property crimes unit is investigating the break-in.

Bolsing says the products are insured, but since nearly all of the store’s product was stolen, Sexology Institute will be closed for an unknown amount of time until products can be replenished. She added that the store will still be set up for First Friday.
