Tim Duncan commercials you may have never seen

…or maybe just forgot about.

I haven’t mentioned it much on this site, but I studied advertising in college. It’s what I thought I wanted to do when I grew up, and it was all I talked about during the interview for the scholarship that my high school awarded my senior year, which I won. I did actually spend an entire year of my life at an advertising agency, McCann Erickson in Houston. Of course, I wasn’t doing anything like what I had gone to school to do. I tired of it quickly, and was very glad when that place was in my rear view mirror.

But I’ve always paid an awful lot of attention to TV commercials, far more than any of my friends did. I really enjoyed studying them, watching and re-watching them, tearing them apart until I understood why they worked, or why they didn’t. Even long after it became obvious that I wasn’t going to have a career in advertising, I kept it up.

That’s why it’s so surprising that I could run across a YouTube mix of Tim Duncan commercials and have more than one that I’m certain I’ve never seen before. And if they’re new to me, then I feel pretty certain that they’ll be new to most of you too.

One caveat before you watch these, not all of them are good (don’t let the title of the video fool you, there’s one of the old Spurs HEB spots in here from before they got really good) and not all of them are new (there’s the poker face AmEx one in here, as well as the “knocked over a plant celebrating” one) but there’s a good mix from early in his career and late — and I’ll be surprised if you’ve seen them all. Enjoy.
