The 12 Days of Christmas for Spurs fans

These holidays, it’s good to support San Antonio.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you fellow Pounders! I’m very proud to say that we are a three-generation Spurs-supporting family. I’m also very proud that my 10 year old nephew (on the nights that he has finished his homework on time) now makes Spurs games appointment viewing. My nearly four decades of watching professional basketball has resulted in me becoming an unofficial NBA ‘Alexa’ of sorts for my wife, family, and friends. Sunday evening, while watching LeBron and the Lakers take on SloMo and the Grizzlies, my dad asked “Son, how old is LeBron anyway?” I replied without pause, “33.” My mom – whom I had thought was not paying attention to the conversation, instantly replied “NO!” and declared her belief that LeBron was 38. LeBron turns 34 next Sunday.

We were watching other teams play on League Pass because there are no Spurs games until Wednesday. You can count me in the category of Spurs fans that is wistful at NOT seeing our team play on Christmas day this year. For many years, our family Christmases included some combination of opening gifts, consuming a regrettable amount of food throughout the day and, most importantly, ending the long day with a Spurs road game in the late afternoon or evening. (According to Jeff Garcia of SpursZone, the Spurs are 4-6 on Christmas day games and 0-2 at home.) Perhaps it isn’t that bad of a thing that the players get to spend some quality time at home again with their loved ones instead of slogging through a tough road game against a quality Western Conference opponent.

In the absence of Spurs action for several days, and in the tradition of ‘You’re a Sly One, Popovich,’ I offer you a holiday rendition of a timeless classic with Spurs-infused words of encouragement for you and yours. So with that said, I present to you:

Your feedback is appreciated! I had hoped to encapsulate a handful of decades of awesomeness in a few short lyrical paragraphs. My wife politely declined to sing the song, but it is my hope to find a friend to supply the vocal magic to the above words soon.

Keep calm and GO SPURS GO!
