Sources: The Spurs have shut down any Kawhi Leonard trade inquiries

If you call the Spurs inquiring about Kawhi Leonard, prepare to get hung up on.

The trade deadline is drawing ever so near, and that can only mean one thing: chaos. The Spurs have rarely been a team who participates in the hubbub this time of year except maybe around the fringes, and that’s usually only if they know a player is unhappy (see: Nando de Colo for Austin Daye in 2014). With recent rumors running amok that more than just a fringe player wants out of San Antonio, NBA GMs are trying their luck by contacting the Spurs about franchise player Kawhi Leonard.

However, word on the street is no team is getting the time of day from the Spurs when making inquiries about such a trade. According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders:

League sources said their calls on Leonard were shut down before they started, so it’s not likely that San Antonio is ready to do anything drastic with Leonard.

If this is true, it’s not surprising. Not only have the Spurs denied that there are irreconcilable differences between them and Leonard, but there is zero reason for the Spurs to even entertain the idea of trading him right now.

He still has two seasons left on his contract (last year is player option) and can be offered a super-max extension of $217 million this summer. If he turns that offer down, then it will be time to worry, but for now it sounds like the Spurs are not going to overreact, nor are they ready to give up on their injured superstar just yet.
