According to SAPD, one man was taken to the hospital after three shots were fired by police at a 21-year-old man found holding a rifle in an alley on the West Side Friday evening.

Police say they received a call about a man feeling depressed and suicidal with possession of a rifle.

“The suspect called a friend of his and said I have a loaded rifle and I am going to kill my family,” said SAPD Chief William McManus.

Police arrived on the scene at 100 Hillsdale around 11 p.m. where they found the suspect in the back alley on his hands and knees with a rifle.

“When officers approached he stood up with the rifle and both officers fired and he was struck three times,” McManus said.

No officers were injured and the man was taken to the hospital.
