San Antonio native Gen. Charles Quinton Brown makes TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020

A San Antonio native who made history in August was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020.

Gen. Charles Quinton Brown — the Air Force’s first African American chief of staff — earned a spot on the annual list of leaders, artists, icons, titans, and pioneers. He was tabbed for the Titans section.

Former Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson recalled Brown’s swearing-in ceremony.

“The smiles on the faces of the surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen, an all-Black unit of fighter pilots in World War II, were matched only by those of the 19-year-olds who now know the sky’s not the limit in today’s Air Force,” Wilson wrote.

Brown, known as “CQ,” was raised in a military family in San Antonio. His grandfather served in a segregated Army unit in World War II.

En route to the Air Force’s top job, Brown logged more than 2,900 hours in the F-16 and other planes. He has 130 combat hours over Iraq, Syria, Libya and Afghanistan.

The general was not the only Texan on this year’s list. Brown was joined by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, singer Selena Gomez, billionaire investor Robert F. Smith and Sister Norma Pimentel, the executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Megan Thee Stallion, the Houston rapper who recently topped the charts with “WAP,” graced the cover of the magazine.
