Are the Spurs and their star swingman heading towards an offseason split?

DeMar DeRozan is reportedly unhappy with his situation in San Antonio, according to a statement made by CNBC Sports Business Reporter Jabari Young on ESPN San Antonio’s “The Blitz”.

The two-time All-NBA two-guard could opt into his $27.7M fifth-year option or decline and enter the offseason as a marquee asset in the notably weak 2020 free-agent class. The Spurs could also attempt to extend their leading scorer or negotiate a sign-and-trade in which both parties benefit while parting ways.

DeRozan spent the first nine years of his professional career as the face of the Raptors franchise before a blockbuster trade sent him to San Antonio. The four-time was reportedly upset with Toronto’s front office after they met with him during the 2018 Las Vegas Summer League and allegedly told him he would not be moved.

His first season with the Spurs ended with a seven-game first-round exit at the hands of the Denver Nuggets, and the Silver and Black were on pace to miss the playoffs his second go-round before the Caronavirus pandemic put the season on hold.

While the future of the 2019-2020 NBA campaign is unclear, San Antonio and their star swingman have an offseason of monumental decisions ahead of them. Yahoo! Senior NBA Insider Chris Haynes reported DeMar would opt out of his contract if he and the Spurs can’t agree on an extension, and all recent signs seem to indicate a breakup may be on the horizon.
