Photos: Whataburger calls new food truck a showstopper

Whataburger’s new set of wheels will allow the iconic Texas fast food joint to travel the country with its beloved burgers.

The chain restaurant unveiled its new food truck Thursday at an educator-appreciation event at the DoSeum and will embark on a multi-state tour in 2021. The truck was introduced amid a big week for Whataburger, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary on Saturday.

Along with the new truck, the company plans to build 15 restaurants this year and 25 restaurants next year in new and existing markets.

“We wanted a way to connect even more with our communities and to introduce Whataburger to new customers in a new and exciting way,” said Rich Scheffler, Vice President of Marketing and Innovation for Whataburger. “And this truck is a showstopper.”

The truck, decked out in Whataburger’s familiar colors, is 36 feet and will have all the same “burger-making power” as its brick and mortar shops, the company said Wednesday.

Scheffler said the idea of a food truck has been in the work for years but were waiting for the perfect time to roll it out.

Next year, the truck will mostly stop in Whataburger’s existing markets but will hit up new markets to let customers know what’s coming. Whataburger also wants to use the truck during national disasters and emergencies.

The truck was built by San Antonio-based Cruising Kitchens — a dream come true for the company, its owner Cameron Davies said.

“Whataburger is run like a big family,” Davies said. “They care about taking care of their people, and that’s important to us, too.”
