Open Thread: The Spurs have added three-point shooting to their game

Will this alteration be enough to elevate the Silver & Black for the rest of the season.

Caught this during last Wednesday night’s telecast.

Is it possible the San Antonio Spurs are joining the long-distance basketball world? LaMarcus Aldridge has now hit a three in each of the last eight games. And as Bruno Passos pointed out so eloquently last Tuesday, with Aldridge spreading the floor and hitting threes, DeMar DeRozan “served as the theoretical big man in a four-out offense.”

It’s not a traditional NBA five-man set, but it does resemble how more teams are setting up. The Houston Rockets superstar James Harden drives and gives himself the option of playing it in, taking a foul, or kicking it out an open three-point shooter. Harden bolts with a full head of steam straight to the basket, pulling in multiple defenders and exposing optional three-point shooters along the perimeter.

DeRozan’s form is less fluid, more complicated, time consuming, and he relies on his agility versus speed.

But the results are promising. DeRozan is shooting over 53% on the season, a feat only matched by Michael Jordan with a minimum of 160 attempts.

This could be the beginning of a new look for the Spurs. This could be the solution to the early season woes limiting the Spurs performance.
