Open Thread: Spurs use the 1998 draft to acquire Antonio Daniels

Welcome to the daily Thread. During the month of June, we are talking NBA Draft. As we lead up to the 2018 NBA Draft on June 21st, we will be revisiting the Spurs draft choices. Today we remember 1998.

After acquiring Tim Duncan in the 1997 NBA Draft and pairing him with All-Star center David Robinson, PATFO went about constructing a squad that could immediately contend for a championship.

For the 1998 draft, the Spurs drafted Domincan shooting guard Felipe López 24th in the draft. López was immediately traded to the Vancouver Grizzlies along with Carl Herrera, who’d been with the Spurs since 1995, for Antonio Daniels. Daniels had been drafted 4th behind Duncan by the Grizzlies just the prior season. He stayed with Spurs through the 2002 season when he was traded as part of a package that sent him to Portland and brought Steve Kerr back to San Antonio.

In the second round of the 1998 draft, the Spurs chose Derrick Dial in the 52nd spot. He played sparingly for two seasons before heading to the New Jersey Nets. Dial played intermittently with NBA teams while playing outside of the NBA. He was selected in 2008 to the D-League.
