Open Thread: Lonnie Walker holds a fundraiser to help with the Australian wildfires

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Lonnie has all the hallmarks of a “Spur for life”.

Today’s Spurs game against the Miami Heat is Patty Mills bobblehead night, and also the Spurs first ever Indigenous Peoples Night. Mills also recently contributed to a $750,000 donation from Australian NBA players to help with the ongoing wildfires, but he isn’t the only Spur raising money for the cause.

On Saturday, Lonnie Walker IV held a group fitness session in his own fundraiser to assist with the fires. Afterwards, he gave an interview to Tom Petrini where, among other things, he discussed what advice Gregg Popovich is giving him to get to the next level. Unsurprisingly for Pop, “play defense like a dog” is the key thing, followed by making smart decisions on offense.

Most importantly, Lonnie knows Pop has his best interests at heart: something fans can sometimes forget or not realize from the outside looking in. You can watch the entirety of his interview as well as highlights from the fundraiser below or by clicking here.

Whether it’s on the court or off, Lonnie is everything Spurs fans have come to expect from their stars/franchise players: giving, unselfish, and willing to be coached. He has all the makings of “Spur for life”. Hopefully that turns out to be true someday.
