Open Thread: Happy birthday, Gregg Popovich

The Spurs head coach turns 70 today.

What do you give the man who has everything?

You don’t. You take it all away.

Take away Tim Duncan, Take away Manu Ginobili. Take away Tony Parker. Take away Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green.

Then you look him in the eyes and say “now what, old man?”

The third winningest coach in NBA history doesn’t say a word, he just gets back to it. Defies all pundits, all predictions, all expectations. Repeatedly.

Happy birthday, Pop.

Gregg Popovich is the greatest NBA coach in history as far as this fan is concerned. And not just because of wins or titles. You represent the qualities this nation should be exemplifying. I love the community services to San Antonio. I appreciate the interest he takes in each player on his squad. And when he speaks him mind, his heart follows.

On and off the court I am proud to be your fan. Through your words and actions, you pave the way for a better tomorrow, no matter what is happening today.

So raise a glass of pinot noir to the man who celebrates his 70th birthday today. And if you see him out, wish him a great day. Because today he is off and can enjoy himself, but tomorrow, the Spurs play the Suns, so it’s back to business.
