Open Thread: Creating the Spurs best bench of all time

Pounders cobble the best San Antonio Spurs back-up five

So far this season Patty Mills has surpassed Malik Rose in points scored by a Spurs bench player. At the same time, Marco Belinelli recently eclipsed Robert Horry’s place in 3 pointers scored by a player in a Spurs jersey.

In both categories, Manu Ginobili reigns supreme. He’s the Spurs leading bench scorer with 8,278. Just under 5,000 points left for Patty to catch up.

He’s also the Spurs top 3-point scorer with 1,495. That’s 536 more than the 2nd place Danny Green and more than double the still active Patty Mills.

Manu is the best Spurs bench player of all time and his stats look to be untouchable by any stretch of the imagination. Which got me to thinking…

WHAT IS THE SPURS ALL-TIME BEST BENCH?

I’ve seen many articles on the Mount Rushmore of the Spurs and best starting line-up of all-time. Tony Parker, George Gervin, Kawhi Leonard, Tin Duncan, and David Robinson made the hypothetical line-up on many sports pages.

So what would be the bench to complement that star-studded starting squad?

Point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. And the only criteria is that the player should have come off the bench more than he started while playing for the San Antonio Spurs.

I look forward to you responses in the comments section.

On a personal note, my band The Gunslingers just booked as the opening act for Monte Montgomery, a true Texas guitar legend at Sam’s Burger Joint on Saturday, November 3rd. This is the biggest gig of my “little engine that could” music career. If you are anywhere near San Antonio (and not already attending the Spurs game), please considering coming out. I would appreciate your friendly faces. Buy your tickets here. And if you do, send me an email and I’ll put you in the running for some Spurs swag from my personal collection.
