Motorcyclist accused of leaving scene of fatal wreck tied to racing

A motorcyclist accused of leaving the scene of a deadly accident that occurred during a purported race on a South Side highway was arrested Friday.

Dan Curtis Fitts, 38, is charged with failure to stop and render aid-death. Fitts was in the process of posting bail, which was set at $100,000, Friday night.

The accident occurred at about 11:50 p.m.on June 10 in the 13900 block of Southwest Loop 410 before South Zarzamora Street.

Quan Van Bach, 28, was one of at least three motorcyclists who witnesses said were traveling west on the highway at high speeds, according to Fitt’s affidavit.

One of the motorcycles then tapped Bach’s bike, witnesses said. Bach’s motorcycle started to wobble before tumbling on the grassy median of the highway.

Bach was vaulted into the air, and his helmet broke free during the crash, an affidavit states.

The motorcycle came to rest 350 feet away from Bach’s body, investigators said.

EMS arrived but Bach was pronounced dead at the scene just after midnight, police said.

His motorcycle was damaged beyond the point that investigators could recognize any transfers of paint or damage from another vehicle.

Hours after the incident, Fitts called police to report an accident not far from the scene. He met with an officer to give his report outside a restaurant in the 6100 block of West Loop 1604 North, roughly 22 miles away from the scene of the crash, investigators said.

He told the officer that he exited the highway and waited because of mechanical problems. Fitts said once he got his motorcycle started, he drove home.

He denied knowing who the other person involved in the accident was or what happened to the motorcyclist, court records state.

Later that same day, a witness who spoke to Fitts shared recordings of their conversations with detectives.

In one call, Fitts told the witness that he was involved in a crash with Bach, and that he left the scene without helping or identifying himself because he was afraid of being arrested.

In another call, Fitts claimed that Bach drove into him, and that he did not want to turn himself in for racing, according to the affidavit.
