Local 104-year-old gets socially-distant birthday surprise

A San Antonio woman got a special surprise Friday — her own parade for her 104th birthday.

Friends and family honored Maria Lopez with the socially-distant celebration, organized by Pride PHC the home care agency used by the birthday girl. Two of her children were even able to join in the quarter mile-long parade down Anacacho Street Friday morning.

“Her smile is contagious. Her energy is boundless and we decided at Pride PHC that she deserves to be celebrated,” said Cindy Cruz, Pride PHC administrator in a news release.

The staff at Pride PHC said that Lopez reminds them to be passionate about life and kind to everyone no matter what age.

Lopez, who was born in Silao Guanajuato, Mexico, is a mother of 11 children and is described by her family as humble, hardworking and noble with a positive attitude and a great smile.

Her family said she “always has a nice thing to say and there is always a plate of warm food for anyone who visits her home.”

Lopez turned 104 on July 1 and the parade was supposed to happen at that time, however, she broke her hip shortly before and had to have emergency surgery so the celebration was postponed to Friday.
