Help Wanted at Pounding the Rock

We’re looking for a few good Spurs fans.

Pounding the Rock has a large, diverse staff of writers. This season, we’ve had contributors file stories from around the globe: Great Britain, Hong Kong, Argentina, Korea, and across the United States. I’m very proud of our team and I do my best to give them the guidance, resources, and encouragement they need to make the most of their talents as writers. But like any general manager of a team, I can see where our roster has holes and what kinds of skills we could use on staff.

So I’m doing something that I’ve never done before: make an open call for writing talent to step up and apply for the chance to contribute to PtR, with applicants being evaluated initially by SB Nation and handed to me for final approval. I’m looking for people to cover breaking news, write game rehashes, do analysis, and produce video content.

Reporting on breaking news means setting the tone for discussions on our site, a tone that often can permeate the broader media landscape. A writer who wants to be involved will need a flexible schedule, particularly during the workday when news often breaks. The goal is to have a post ready to be published very soon after a story breaks. Usually a couple hundred words (2-3 paragraphs) is enough to inform the readers and start a discussion on the site, with more detailed analysis coming later.

Game rehashes are some of the most creative and wide-ranging posts we regularly do, bringing in all kinds of topics and themes to compare to the game, team, and players. Without having to talk about the flow of a particular contest, the aim is to involve something often completely disconnected from basketball and use it as a lens to reveal something new or overlooked. They’re a perfect opportunity to use your love for words, literature, movies and music — and combine it with your appreciation for basketball and fanaticism for the Spurs.

Analysis articles are as demanding as content gets, whether it’s focusing on X’s and O’s like the Spurs Playbook, unlocking statistics like in the Study Hall, or using an understanding of the game to imagine what will happen to the team in specific circumstances.

I add writers as needs arise, but this kind of invitation isn’t a regular occurrence and I’m hoping anyone interested will respond (even if you’re tried in the past) so we can continue to improve Pounding the Rock, and grow as our readership does.

If you are selected, I’ll do what I can to help you work on your craft as a writer and provide whatever guidance I can in your career.
