Happy Birthday to two Spurs champions: Avery Johnson and Marco Belinelli

Happy Birthday to The Little General and Spicy Meatball.
It’s a nice day for Spurs fans. Two of our championship players are celebrating birthdays. One has his jersey in the rafters. The other is in his second stint with the Spurs.
Avery Johnson
Avery Johnson turns fifty-five today. The point guard was part of that monumental 1999 San Antonio Spurs Championship. In fact, he made the final shot to solidify the series win in New York City.
Johnson had three stints with the Spurs, and it was third time alongside Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Sean Elliott that proved a charm.
Avery went on to coach in the NBA, writing a motivational book between seasons, before landing at the college level coaching his own son with the Alabama Crimson.
Marco Belinelli
Well wishes and buon compleanno also go out to current swingman and member of the most recent Spurs championship, Marco Belinelli. Belli is thirty-four today, and an elder statesman by today’s NBA standards. During this suspension of global sports, Marco is supporting his home nation of Italy which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of his family is still there. He and the NBA player’s union have partnered in support.
Belinelli is the only Spurs player to win the NBA Three-point Shootout, which he did in 2014 during the All-Star Break before he helped the Spurs to earn their fifth title, his first NBA Championship.
