Frank Lampard wants to ‘freshen up’ Chelsea squad, with Timo Werner and Philippe Coutinho targets

Frank Lampard is determined to make amends for Chelsea‘s barren January with an active summer window, hoping to refresh the Blues squad.

The Stamford Bridge outfit were banned from making additions last summer, with FIFA punishing the club for rule breaches concerning academy players.

The two-window ban was lifted in time for January after an appeal, but Chelsea failed to bring in any new faces, frustrating their young manager.

Lampard has impressed with his youthful revolution of the Blues but is intent on adding some established talent to a squad packed with academy graduates.

‘I’m certainly excited about the squad we’ve got, with the young players and if we can get a few additions for areas I feel we need,’ the ex-midfielder told the club’s official magazine.

‘We didn’t bring in anyone in January, it didn’t work out to be right for us at the time, and last summer we couldn’t bring anyone in, so those windows are gone and we haven’t changed.

‘So I am excited about the squad we’ve got, if we can freshen up in the right areas we all know that.’

The Blues have already sealed the signing of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax for £33million, but Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner are also being linked to the club.

With Willian and Pedro also set to leave the club in the summer, Lampard looks like he will get his wish of a squad turnover.

The Blues sit fourth in the Premier League ahead of the restart on June 17, a finish that would surpass expectations in the Englishman’s first season in charge.
