Derrick White is probable vs. Heat, Gay and Gasol are out

Both some good and bad news for the Spurs on the injury front.

For the first time this season, there’s a positive change to the Spurs injury report. Per San Antonio Express News’ Tom Orsborn, guard Derrick White is listed as probable for tomorrow’s match-up with the Miami Heat.

But of course, it’s not the Spurs if there isn’t some bad news mixed in as well: Pau Gasol (sore foot) and Rudy Gay (sore heel) are listed as out, and you can naturally add Dejounte Murray (torn ACL) and Lonnie Walker IV (torn meniscus) to that list as well.

Obviously getting White back is big news for the Spurs’ depleted guard rotation. He was originally named the starting point guard after Murray went down in the preseason, only to suffer a torn ligament in his foot the next game. Whether its in Miami or a game or two later, it is good to know his return is now imminent. Time will tell if he retakes the starting point guard position from Bryn Forbes or works his way back with a bench unit that could use his play-making ability.

As for the bad news, Gay will miss his second straight game with a sore heel — the same one that kept bothering him last season — and he has been a big part of what makes the Spurs offense go. Gasol has also played an integral role off the bench as a play-making point/center, so now is Jakob Poeltl’s chance to show Pop what he can do in an expanded role.
