Even after a down year, Dejounte Murray still believes in the San Antonio Spurs

For an organization that has been the model of consistency over the past two decades, this season was a rude awakening for the San Antonio Spurs. The roster was a mix of impressive young players and older veterans but the team was never able to pull everything together and play up to the level that Spurs fans have become accustomed to seeing.

The Spurs went on their longest losing streak of Gregg Popovich’s tenure towards the beginning of season, leading some fans to question if the team was heading in the right direction. And while there are valid criticisms to be made, there is still a sense of optimism about the teams future.

You can’t watch Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Lonnie Walker, and Keldon Johnson without getting excited thinking about what the group can do with a few more years under their belts. They’ve all shown flashes of greatness at times but bringing it all together and leading the team back to the heights that Spurs teams of the past enjoyed will be a tougher task.

The young Spurs seem to be a close bunch but of the group, Murray has emerged as one of the most confident and vocal. Even though he’s just 23 years old, Murray is one of the longest tenured players on the roster. He’s experienced the highs and lows of the NBA and, through it all, has maintained his faith in the Spurs process.

Without LaMarcus Aldridge, the Spurs playoff chances are slim. But from the workout videos we’ve seen of the guys getting back in the gym to the statements made by Jakob Poeltl, and now Murray, there’s a sense of urgency and hunger emanating from the team as they get closer to taking the court once again. They all know that the team is going thorugh a major transition but as Murray said, it’s a challenge that the young guys on the team are embracing.

“I believe in hard work and I believe in the Spurs organization. From the coaching staff to the front office, everybody around. Whatever it takes to get us where we need to go, we’re moving on to a new era and it’s not easy. I’m just happy to be playing…I’m young in my career and I believe in myself and the Spurs organization. We’re going to get to where we need to be.”

That’s exactly the kind of confident, hardworking leader Spurs fans should want at the front of the organzation’s charge into the future. Murray has all the confidence in the world on the court and it’s clear that he takes the task in front of him and the rest of the team in stride.

The historic stretch of consecutive postseason appearances is in serious danger but that doesn’t mean that the Spurs are going to mail in these final few regular season games. We’re going to see a firey and hungry San Antonio squad down in Orlando. Some are up for contract extensions, others are just hungry to return to action, but all of the guys have something to fight for.

The San Antonio Spurs will be back in action soon and we should all be looking forward to seeing the guys take the court again after all of the confidence they’ve been exuding over the past few weeks.
