Crucifix damaged after vandalism at Catholic seminary in San Antonio

A Catholic seminary near Woodlawn Lake was vandalized Thursday night, according to the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

An outdoor crucifix and five glass doors were damaged during the incident, which occurred shortly after 10 p.m. at Assumption Seminary.

“First and foremost, all of our seminarians and all the people at the seminary are safe,” said Father Hy Nguyen, the seminary’s rector, in a statement. “We ask for your prayers for this misguided person, and for the safety of the Assumption community.”

According to Nguyen, an unidentified man walked up to a dormitory building carrying a baseball bat or similar object. He struck the doors repeatedly, smashing holes in the glass. Police were called but the man fled before officers arrived.

On the crucifix, Jesus Christ’s toes were broken off and a San Antonio Spurs jersey was placed around his head.

No one was injured during the incident, the archdiocese said. Repairs were underway Friday morning.

A police report notes that a detective took pictures of the crime scene and collected an article of clothing that was possibly dropped by the suspect. The case remains under investigation.
