However, the 30-year old has yet to hear from any club and is concentrating on finishing the season in Italy once Serie A resumes after the coronavirus lockdown.

Smalling, who has two years left on contract at United plus a one year option, could even make a comeback at Old Trafford depending on talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer.

The Greenwich-born defender and his wife Sam have thoroughly enjoyed their spell in Italy where they have been welcomed by locals while his displays have made him a firm favourite with Roma fans.

He has remained in Rome during the coronavirus lockdown and hopes to finish the campaign on a high once it resumes. Roma, like United, made the last 16 of the Europa League and stand fifth in the Serie A table.

United may yet add another centre back in the summer as they consider Smalling’s future and that of Phil Jones.

Marcos Rojo is keen to resolve his future too once his loan ends with Estudiantes.

There have been question marks over Victor Lindelof at stages this season while Axel Tuanzebe has struggled with injury. Eric Bailly though has made a promising return following his lengthy spell on the sidelines.
