Caglar Soyuncu set for late fitness test ahead of Leicester vs Aston Villa

Caglar Soyuncu will be assessed by Leicester on Thursday after missing Turkey’s Nations League clash with Serbia due to a hamstring problem.

Turkey boss Senol Gunes revealed the injury had prevented Soyuncu playing in the 2-2 draw, making him a doubt for the Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Sunday.

Soyuncu, 24, could be replaced by Wesley Fofana, who has yet to make his debut following his £31.5million move from Saint Etienne before the top-flight’s international transfer window closed.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers was also awaiting an update on Soyuncu’s fellow centre-back Jonny Evans, who played the first half of Northern Ireland’s 1-0 defeat by Norway but did not reappear after the break, apparently after reporting pain in his thigh.

Leicester also hope to have midfielder James Maddison available again after he missed the 3-0 home defeat by West Ham before the international break due to a calf problem.

Rodgers had decided not to risk the playmaker, who has yet to start a league fixture this term, against the Hammers.

Before that result, Leicester had made a flying start to the campaign, winning their opening three matches and scoring 12 goals in the process, including a remarkable 5-2 victory at Manchester City last month.

Their last meeting with Villa at King Power Stadium ended in a 4-0 home win in March, the final league game before the three-month coronavirus shutdown.

But with Villa full of confidence after beating champions Liverpool 7-2 before the international break, a repeat of that result appears highly unlikely.
