Bexar County parks will be closed during Labor Day weekend to help slow spread of COVID-19

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff has ordered all county parks to close during the Labor Day Weekend. The Sept. 4-7 closures are meant to slow the spread of COVID-19, the judge said Wednesday during his daily briefing with San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg.

“Leading up to schools opening, we want to make sure we do everything we can to make it as safe as we can,” the judge said during the briefing.

Last month, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department issued a directive, saying schools should not open for on-campus learning prior to Sept. 7, meaning the city and county officials have 24 days to help curb the spread before sending students to school.

“All indications are moving in the right directions but they are moving fairly slowly,” Wolff said.

Officials had a similar closure over Fourth of July weekend to prevent people from gathering in large groups. Wolff said when they closed the parks then, they saw a “tremendous improvement” with cases compared to what the San Antonio area saw after Memorial Day.

The parks will all close at 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 4 and reopen at 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 7.

“We want to make sure we are taking full precautions,” Nirenberg said.
