None of the three in Boston were multilingual. Larry Bird’s accent, to use his own phrase, came from being the hick from French Lick. All three of them were big men. All three were born in the continental United States. All three were drafted eighth or higher. None ever starred in an H-E-B commercial. At first glance, Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale weren’t anything like Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. But take it from someone who knew both groups — they had more in common than a record.
